My Review

“The Strange Love of Martha Ivers” is a film noir drama where Barbara Stanwyck plays a wealthy young woman who accidentally kills her aunt and is blackmailed for years over the incident. Stanwyck plays the role to the hilt, well directed by Lewis Milestone (“A Walk in the Sun” 1945) from a sterling script by Robert Rossen.

The cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott, Judith Anderson, Janis Wilson, Roman Bohnen, Darryl Hickman, Ann Doran, Frank Orth, Charles D. Brown, Mickey Kuhn, James Flavin, and Kirk Douglas in his feature film debut. Blake Edwards appeared in a rare acting role, an uncredited part as a sailor. He later became an Academy Award winning movie director.

The watchable black-and-white noir “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers” was successful at the box office for producer Hal B. Wallis and Paramount Pictures. It was nominated for one Oscar for Best Writing/Original Story (John Patrick).
