My Review

Roger Moore proves true the old adage that the third time is a charm with “The Spy Who Loved Me.” His number three journey as 007, and the tenth James Bond film from Eon Productions, is probably Moore’s best of his seven appearances. This movie is also the first in the Bond franchise produced solely by Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli, as Harry Saltzman sold his interest in Eon Productions after the release of “The Man With the Golden Gun” (1974).

Director Lewis Gilbert (“Alfie” 1966) and screenwriters Christopher Wood and Richard Maibaum, newcomers to the Bond crew, provided a fresh perspective and new blood to the 15-year-old 007 series. Characteristics old and new includes loads of action, exotic location shoots, good plots and storylines, beautiful Bond women, and Moore’s inclination to puns all add to the picture.

Marvin Hamlisch contributed to this film by composing the musical score, and the music (with lyrics by Carol Bayer Sager) of the theme song “Nobody Does It Better,” a big hit on the charts by Carly Simon.

The cast includes Barbara Bach as the Bond girl, a Russian agent who teams up with Bond to fight a common enemy. That would be Karl Stromberg, the villain who plots to trigger World War III for his personal financial gain. Curt Jurgens delivers a subtle and effective performance here.

Richard Kiel is memorable as Jaws, Stromberg’s goon with metal teeth. He would be hired for the next Bond thriller “Moonraker” (1979). Co-stars include Caroline Munro, Milton Reid, Robert Brown, George Baker, Edward de Souza, Shane Rimmer, Michael Billington, and Walter Gotell as the head of the KGB. Bond’s co-workers at MI6 are Geoffrey Keen as the Minister of Defense, Bernard Lee as M, Desmond Llewelyn as Q, and Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny.

“The Spy Who Loved Me” was a huge hit at the box office for producer Albert Broccoli, Eon Productions, and United Artists.
