An all-star cast, a fun western story, and beautiful filming in Technicolor are all part of “The Sons of Katie Elder.” This tale of four brothers who are determined to avenge the murder of their father and the swindling of their mother was put together by a legendary movie-making team: Director Henry Hathaway (“Call Northside 777” 1948) and producer Hal B. Wallis (“Casablanca” 1942). Both would work with star John Wayne on “True Grit” (1969).
The screenwriters William H. Wright, Allan Weiss, and Harry Essex provided an abundance of superb dialogue for a talented cast headed by John Wayne, Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, and Michael Anderson Jr. as the four sons. All turned in fine performances, but there was artistic license as the age difference between the four was very wide indeed. Wayne was born in 1907 and Anderson in 1943, a 36 year age gap. Also, none of the four remotely resembled each other.
The supporting cast includes Martha Hyer, George Kennedy, Paul Fix, Jeremy Slate, James Gregory, Dennis Hopper, Strother Martin, John Doucette, and Percy Helton. Elmer Bernstein composed the musical score for the very watchable and popular “The Sons of Katie Elder” from Paramount Pictures.
