“The Slanted Screen” is an interesting documentary film which takes a look how Asian-American males have been portrayed by Hollywood in movies and television. Producer-director-screenwriter Jeff Adachi, himself a Japanese-American, interviews some actors including Jason Scott Lee, Dustin Nguyen, James Shigeta, Will Yun Lee, Justin Lin, Tzi Ma, and Mako.
Prominently featured in the film is the biography of Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa (1886-1973), whose career started in silent pictures in 1914. He became quite a heartthrob among female American movie goers. He was the first male sex symbol in Hollywood, several years ahead of Rudolph Valentino. In 1957, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor Oscar in “The Bridge on the River Kwai.” “The Slanted Screen” was narrated by Daniel Dae Kim of “Lost” (2004-2010) and “Hawaii 5-0” (2010-2017).
