My Review

One of the most riveting crime dramas to come out of Italy, or anywhere else, in recent years is “The Sicilian Girl.” It is the true story of eleven-year-old Rita Mancuso, whose testimony was instrumental in convicting numerous Mafia figures in Sicily in 1991. Tight direction by Marco Amenta made this 115 minute film fly by; not a second of screen time was wasted. Amenta also co-wrote the screenplay with Sergio Donati and Gianni Romoli.

Veronica D’Agostino gives an astonishing performance as Rita. It is hard to imagine this film without her. Other cast members include Francesco Casisa, Gerard Jugnot, Marcello Mazzarella, Primo Reggiani, Lucia Sardo, and Paolo Briguglia. Also worth mentioning is the great cinematography by Luca Bigazzi and the compelling musical score written by Pasquale Catalano. “The Sicilian Girl” is a joint Italian-French production from several film-making companies, a success at the box office.
