“The Shining” is a psychological horror movie about a man who becomes a winter caretaker at a hotel in Colorado. As he settles in with his wife and son, it soon becomes evident that the hotel is hiding dark secrets and the caretaker’s mental health declines precipitously. Director Stanley Kubrick (“2001: A Space Odyssey” 1968) put together a superior horror film with good writing and marvelous performances. He co-wrote the screenplay with Diane Johnson, based on the 1977 novel of the same name by Stephen King.
Jack Nicholson heads the cast as the mentally unstable custodian Jack Torrance, a perfect role for him. Shelley Duvall also delivers in the performance department as his kooky wife, who spends a lot of on-screen time screaming. Co-stars include Danny Lloyd as their son, Barry Nelson, Scatman Crothers, Philip Stone, Joe Turkel, Tony Burton, Barry Dennen, Anne Jackson, and Lisa and Louise Burns as the twins. The watchable scary film “The Shining” was a modest success at the box office for producer Stanley Kubrick, The Producer Circle Company, Peregrine Productions, Hawk Films, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
