My Review

“The Sea of Grass” is a western film starring Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn as a newly married couple who move to his massive million-acre ranch in New Mexico, where she discovers her husband’s reputation as a tyrant. The western melodrama proceeds from there, very expertly directed by Elia Kazan (“A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” 1945) from an excellent script by Vincent Lawrence, Marguerite Roberts, and Edward E. Paramore Jr. It was based on the 1937 novel by Conrad Richter.

The supporting cast from MGM’s stable of talented thespians include Robert Walker, Melvyn Douglas, Phyliss Thaxter, Edgar Buchanan, Harry Carey, Ruth Nelson, and Charles Trowbridge. The watchable horse-opera “The Sea of Grass” was a hit at the box office for producer Pandro S. Berman and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This was the most commercially successful of all nine of the Tracy-Hepburn pictures.
