My Review

Errol Flynn does his usual swashbuckling routine in the Warner Bros. action-adventure film “The Sea Hawk.” With lavish production by Hal B. Wallis, expert direction by Michael Curtiz (“Angels with Dirty Faces” 1938), and a great screenplay by Howard Koch and Seton I. Miller, this movie with a 127 minute running time is pure entertainment.

Flynn plays Captain Geoffrey Thorpe of Her Majesty’s ship Albatross, who aids in England’s defense in the period prior to the Spanish Armada. Flynn is in top form in “The Sea Hawk,” as are co-stars Brenda Marshall, Claude Rains, Donald Crisp, Alan Hale, Gilbert Roland, Henry Daniell, Una O’Connor, William Lundigan, Montagu Love, and Flora Robson as Queen Elizabeth I of England. Edgar Buchanan appears in an uncredited cameo role.

“The Sea Hawk” was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Art Direction/Black and White, Sound Recording, Special Effects, and Original Score, a marvelous composition by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Everything is indeed shipshape in the watchable motion picture “The Sea Hawk,” outstanding Depression Era escapist programming, a big success at the box office.
