My Review

One of the most entertaining movies of the year is “The Roses,” a black comedy about a picture-perfect couple who begin experiencing cracks in their marriage when his career nosedives and her ambitions take off. Director Jay Roach (“Bombshell” 2019) put together an engrossing and witty comedy-drama that has outstanding production values, sterling performances, and marvelous writing. The screenplay by Tony McNamara was adapted from the 1981 novel “The War of the Roses” by Warren Adler.

The cast is headed by Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, who are superb as Theo and Ivy Rose. Both have excelled in dramatic roles over the years and do very well with this picture’s satirical comedy. Co-stars include Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, Allison Janey, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Delaney Quinn, Hala Finley, Ollie Robinson, Wells Rappaport, and Ncuti Gatwa as Ivy’s restaurant manager. Gatwa currently stars as the Fifteenth Doctor on the popular “Doctor Who” television program.

There is not a dull moment in the entertaining film “The Roses,” which opened to big box office this weekend for executive producers Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, producer Jay Roach, South of the River Pictures, SunnyMarch Production Company, Delirious Media, Searchlight Pictures, and The Walt Disney Company. It is a remake of the 1989 film “The War of the Roses” which featured Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas, and Danny DeVito.
