My Review

“The Roommate” is a psychological thriller film that tells the story of a young woman named Sarah starting her freshman year at college. She immediately bonds with her college roommate Rebecca, and as Sarah expands her circle of friends, Rebecca becomes resentful and her behavior takes some radical turns. The heavy drama proceeds from there.

Unfortunately, Danish director Christian E. Christiansen does not take advantage of a promising premise and made a movie that is less than a thriller. The screenplay by Sonny Mallhi is unfocused. And there was questionable casting of the lead actresses, Minka Kelly as Sarah and Leighton Meester as Rebecca. They physically resemble each other and this lead to confusion as the film progressed.

Co-stars include Billy Zane, Frances Fisher, Cam Gigandet, Danneel Harris, Matt Lanter, Nina Dobrev, Aly Michalka, and Kat Graham. However, the unwatchable show “The Roommate” did have some success at the box office for Vertigo Entertainment and Screen Gems. Many viewers may find “The Roommate” acceptable escapist programming.
