My Review

The last of the seven “Road” pictures with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby was “The Road to Hong Kong.” The story has Hope memorizing a secret formula for space travel which brings on loads of laughs and hilarity. Director Norman Panama (“How to Commit Marriage” 1969) did a good job at the helm of the film, co-writing the screenplay with Melvin Frank. Panama gave this project better production values than the other “Road” films.

Co-stars include Joan Collins, Robert Morley, Peter Sellers, Walter Gotell, David Niven, and Dorothy Lamour in an extended cameo appearance. This was apparently compensation for being replaced by Collins as the female lead of the series. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin also made cameos. “The Road to Hong Kong” was modestly successful at the box office for producer Melvin Frank, Melnor Films, and United Artists.

The films in the series includes “Road to Singapore” (1940), “Road to Zanzibar” (1941), “Road to Morocco” (1942), “Road to Utopia” (1946), “Road to Rio” (1947), “Road to Bali” (1952), and “The Road to Hong Kong” (1962). An eighth film was planned in 1977, with Hope, Crosby, and Lamour, but Bing passed way before production began. It was to be called “The Road to the Fountain of Youth.”
