Anthony Hopkins plays an English butler looking back on his life and career with nostalgia and regrets in “The Remains of the Day.” Director James Ivory (“Howard’s End” 1992) put together an excellent drama with fantastic production values, memorable performances, and great writing by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. It was even filmed in Technicolor.
Co-stars with Hopkins include Emma Thompson, Christopher Reeve, Hugh Grant, James Fox, Peter Vaughn, Tim Pigott-Smith, Michael Lonsdale, Paula Jacobs, Lena Headey, Pip Torrens, and John Savident. The very watchable “The Remains of the Day” was a big hit at the box office for producers Ismail Merchant and Mike Nichols, Merchant Ivory Productions, and Columbia Pictures. The film received eight Academy Award nods with zero wins.
