John Steinbeck’s “The Red Pony” is a memorable tale of an eight-year-old boy and a pony given to him as a gift, set in the Salinas Valley of central California. The film is based on Steinbeck’s short story, published in the 1930’s. He also wrote the script under capable direction by Lewis Milestone (“The Strange Love of Martha Ivers” 1946). Milestone gave the film a rambling, comfortable feel much like Steinbeck’s novels. The film is also graced by an original score by Aaron Copland.
The cast includes Peter Miles as the boy, Myrna Loy and Sheppard Strudwick as his parents, Louis Calhern as the grandfather, Robert Mitchum as the stable helper, Margaret Hamilton as the school teacher, and Beau Bridges as his friend Beau, an early role for Bridges in his long career, still in progress. This watchable Technicolor movie “The Red Pony” was a success in theaters for producer Lewis Milestone, Charles K. Feldman Group, Lewis Milestone Productions, and Republic Pictures.
