My Review

“The Reagans” is a high quality drama about President Ronald Reagan and wife Nancy Davis Reagan. Director Robert Allan Ackerman was professional at the helm of this look into the life of the 40th U. S. President, with James Brolin and Judy Davis believable as the First Couple of the 1980’s. Jane Marchwood, Tom Rickman, and Elizabeth Egloff penned the teleplay.

The film starts in 1949, after his divorce from Oscar winning actress Jane Wyman, and marriage to little-known actress Nancy Davis. It then proceeds to his remaining years in Hollywood to his two terms as Governor of California, his runs for the Presidency against Richard Nixon in 1968 and against President Gerald Ford in 1976 and finally being elected President in 1980 defeating the incumbent Jimmy Carter.

The supporting cast includes Zeliko Ivanek as Michael Deaver, Mary Beth Peil as Edith Davis, Bill Smitrovich as Alexander Haig, Shad Hart as Ron Reagan, Zoie Palmer as Patti Davis, John Stamos as John Sears, Stewart Bick as Lew Wasserman, Carolyn Dunn as Maureen Reagan, Tod Fennell as Michael Reagan, George R. Robertson as Barry Goldwater, John Koensgen as Mervyn LeRoy, Sean McCann as George Schultz, Tom Rack as Elie Wiesel, Al Goulem as Oliver North, John Anderson as Jimmy Carter, Peter Colvey as Gerald Ford, and Jerome Tiberghien as William F. Buckley Jr.

Some revelations includes President Reagan frequently consulting former President Nixon early in his term, much to Nancy’s disapproval. And while Reagan’s personal Christian faith is well known, Mrs. Reagan is portrayed as not terribly pious. Her mother, Edith Davis, considered Ronnie as “too religious.”

“The Reagans” is a watchable and fascinating three-hour made-for-television movie from Storyline Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television that was aired on the Showtime cable channel on November 30, 2003.
