“The Quiet Man” is a comedy drama movie about an Irishman returning to Ireland and attempting to buy his old family farm, running into all kinds of conflict and problems. Director John Ford seemed intent on creating a melodrama on Irish lifestyles and attitudes, with the viewer’s enjoyment of the film dependent upon his or her appreciation of Irish culture. The passable script was written by Frank S. Nugent, based on a 1933 short story by Maurice Walsh.
The cast includes John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Barry Fitzgerald, Arthur Shields, Ward Bond, Victor McLaglen, Mildred Natwick, Francis Ford, Arthur Shields, and Ken Curtis. The barely watchable “The Quiet Man” was a bit long at a 129 minute running time. In other words, boring! It was nevertheless successful in theatrical release for producer John Ford, Argosy Pictures, and Republic Pictures. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning two: Best Director and Best Cinematography (Winton C. Hotch and Archie Stout). Non-winners were Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (McLaglen), Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Sound.
