My Review

“The Professionals” is a western film about a rancher who hires four men to rescue his kidnapped wife from a bandito. The four men are professionals needed for the job: An explosives expert, a weapons specialist, a horse wrangler, and a scout. Director-screenwriter Richard Brooks crafted a fun and colorful western, adapted from a 1964 novel “A Mule for the Marquesa” by Frank O’Rourke.

It was filmed in Technicolor in Death Valley and Coachella Valley in California, and featured an all-star cast including Ralph Bellamy as the rancher, Claudia Cardinale as his wife, Jack Palance as the bandito, as well as Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, and Woody Strode as the professionals. Others include Joe De Santis, Raphael Bertrand, Maria Gomez.

“The Professionals” is a professionally produced motion picture from producer Richard Brooks, Pax Enterprises, and Columbia Pictures. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning zero: Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography for Conrad L. Hall.
