My Review

“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” is something of a psychological study of a teacher at a girl’s school and her six favorites in the class. Maggie Smith’s layered performance of Jean Brodie, who is noted for displaying signs of narcissism, won her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The screenplay by Jay Presson Allen was adapted from the 1961 novel by Muriel Spark and the 1966 London stage production starring Vanessa Redgrave.

Director Ronald Neame directed traffic in this film, headlined with a good lead performance but overall somewhat of a bland story. The supporting cast that includes Robert Stephens (husband of Smith), Pamela Franklin, Gordon Jackson, Celia Johnson, Jane Carr, Diane Grayson, and Ann Way as Miss Gaunt. Director of Music Rod McKuen was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Song for the theme “Jean,” a big hit on the charts that year for singer Oliver. “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” was only a modest hit at the box office for 20th Century Fox.
