My Review

“The Postman Always Rings Twice” is a movie about a roadside diner owner who runs into trouble when he hires a drifter to work in his restaurant. The man starts having an affair with his young wife, and the fireworks proceed from there. Tay Garnett (“Bataan” 1943) tightly directed this classic black-and-white film noir with exemplary writing by Harry Ruskin and Niven Bush, adapted from the 1943 novel of the same name by James M. Cain.

Lana Turner and John Garfield were marvelous in the lead roles with dynamite chemistry, sexual and otherwise. Turner is in her prime here, at the peak of her career. The supporting cast includes Cecil Kellaway, Hume Cronyn, Leon Ames, Audrey Trotter, Alan Reed, and Jeff York as Blair. The very watchable melodrama “The Postman Always Rings Twice” was a big hit at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. A remake of this movie was released in 1981 starring Jack Nicholas and Jessica Lange.
