Producer Irwin Allen (“Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” 1961) hired a talented all-star cast to populate “Poseidon.” This includes Gene Hackman as the Rev. Scott who leads the group to safety, Ernest Borgnine as a hot-tempered police detective, Stella Stevens as his wife, Jack Albertson and Shelley Winters as a Jewish couple going to Israel to meet their grandson for the first time, and Leslie Nielson as the ship’s captain. Others include Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowell, Stella Stevens, Arthur O’Connell, Eric Shea, Fred Sadoff, Sheila Matthews, John Crawford, Bob Hastings, and Charles Bateman.
“The Poseidon Adventure” was a big blockbuster in movie theaters for producer Irwin Allen, Kent Productions Ltd., and 20th Century Fox. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning two: Best Song (“The Morning After” by Al Kasha & Joel Hirschhorn) and Best Visual Effects. Shelley Winters was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and John Williams for Best Original Dramatic Score. “The Poseidon Adventure” was the second highest grossing film of 1972, after “The Godfather.” A sequel was released in 1979 called “Beyond the Poseidon Adventure.”
