“The Paradine Case” is the story of an attorney hired to defend a young Italian woman living in London accused of murdering her husband. He soon becomes infatuated with the beautiful and enigmatic woman, causing ethical lapses, with the dramatics proceeding from there. Director Alfred Hitchcock (“Spellbound” 1945) incorporates into the movie his usual high drama, characteristic suspense, and exceptional atmospherics to make for top-rate entertainment.
Gregory Peck brilliantly plays the title role with his persona dominating the screen. Co-stars include Alida Valli as the accused woman, Ann Todd as the lawyer’s wife, Charles Laughton as the judge, Charles Coburn, Joan Tetzel, Ethel Barrymore, Louis Jourdan, Leo G. Carroll, Isobel Elsom, and John Williams. Both Valli and Jourdan make their English language film debut here. Barrymore was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, the film’s only Oscar nomination.
The very entertaining and suspense-filled movie “The Paradine Case” was produced by David O. Selznick for Vanguard Films and Selznick Releasing Organization. The screenplay was written by Alma Reville (Mrs. Hitchcock) and James Bridie, adapted from the 1933 novel of the same name by Robert Hitchins.
