My Review

“The Outlaw Josey Wales” tells the post-Civil War tale of a farmer who is out for revenge for the murder of his wife and son by Northern sympathizers. He becomes an outlaw and gathers a group of off-beat companions who get into all kinds of trouble. Director Clint Eastwood (“Play Misty For Me” 1971) does an outstanding job at the helm of the project, from an excellent screenplay by Sonia Chermus and Phil Kaufman, adapted from the 1973 western novel “Gone to Texas” by Forrest Carter.

Eastwood also does his usual amazing big-screen magic in the title role; there is really no one else like him, and this is one of the best roles of his career. His supporting cast includes Chief Dan George as Lone Watie, Sandra Locke as Laura Lee, Paula Trueman as Grandma Sarah, Sam Bottoms as Jamie, and Geraldine Keams as Little Moonlight. Others include Bill McKinney, John Vernon, Royal Dano, John Mitchum, Richard Farnsworth, Will Sampson, Joyce Jameson, Woodrow Parfrey, Matt Clark, and Kyle Eastwood (son of Clint) in his movie debut in an uncredited role as Wales’ son.

The wildly entertaining “The Outlaw Josey Wales” was a big hit at the box office for The Malpaso Company and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Music Score. A sequel starring Michael Parks in the title role was released in 1986 called “The Return of Josey Wales.”
