“The Northman” is a dramatic action picture about Amleth, a Viking prince who sets out to get revenge on the people who killed his father. From the start, director Robert Eggers (“The Lighthouse” 2019) sets a dark and even a bit nihilistic mood of the film, in the cold, wet, and rainy Scandinavia. It somehow works, if the viewer sticks with it, as the movie unfolds as a riveting drama, due to his superb direction and the well written screenplay by Eggers and Sjon.
Alexander Skarsgard is outstanding as the young Amleth, seemingly made to order for the role. Others include Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Ethan Hawke, William Dafoe, and Gustav Lindh. Eggers and Skarsgard also served as one of several producers of this watchable independent motion picture, not terribly successful at the box office. (By the way, the legend of Amleth was the basis for Bill Shakespeare’s legendary play “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.”)
