“The Nativity Story” is a fine drama about the nativity of Jesus, faithful to the New Testament accounts and to the “Jewishness” of Mary and Joseph. Director Catherine Harwicke (“Lords of Dogtown” 2005) and screenwriter Mike Rich have created a film with good production values and good acting.
Keisha Castle-Hughes seems to capture the mature innocence of Mary, the teenage girl selected by God to be the mother of Israel’s Messiah. Oscar Isaac is well cast as her fiance Joseph. The supporting cast is also top rate: Shohreh Aghdashloo as Elizabeth, Stanley Townsend as Zechariah, Ciaran Hinds as King Harod, and Alexander Siddig as the Angel Gabriel.
“The Nativity Story” is outstanding telling of the first Christmas from Temple Hill Entertainment and New Line Cinema.
