“The Naked Spur” is a western drama about a bounty hunter who tries to bring a murderer to justice with the help of two less than trustworthy strangers. The story is from an excellent script by Sam Rolfe and Harold Jack Bloom, who were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Director Anthony Mann certainly had the Midas touch with this wonderful western which displays great production values like good writing and marvelous performances. The stars include James Stewart, Janet Leigh, Robert Ryan, Ralph Meeker, and Millard Mitchell. Director Mann worked with Stewart on five other pictures, including “The Glenn Miller Story” (1954).
William C. Mellor was in charge of the outstanding cinematography, with filming taking place in photogenic Colorado, in Technicolor. The original musical score was composed by Bronislaw Kaper. All part of the very watchable horse opera “The Naked Spur,” often described as one of the best western films of all time. It was popular in theatrical release for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
