“The Naked Jungle” is an action-adventure movie about a cocoa plantation in Brazil under attack by a large group of aggressive army ants. Director Byron Haskin (“The War of the Worlds” 1953) made good use of special effects, excellent performances by cast, and a well written script to create an exciting adventure picture and even a scary 1950’s style horror film. The screenplay was penned by Ranald MacDougall, Ben Maddow, and Philip Yordan.
The cast is headed by Charlton Heston as the plantation owner, Eleanor Parker as his wife, and William Conrad as the Commissioner. Parker received top billing in the credits, as Heston had not yet achieved superstar status. Co-stars include Abraham Sofaer, John Dierkes, Leonard Strong, Leon Lontoc, Rodd Redwing, and Douglas Fowley as the medicine man.
The cinematography by Ernest Laszlo, which was filmed in beautiful Technicolor, vividly show the marabunta (Portuguese for carnivorous army ants) marching across the Amazon jungle devouring everything in their path. The watchable motion picture “The Naked Jungle” popular at the box office for Paramount Pictures.
