Universal Pictures attempted to revive and reboot the monster characters they have owned for decades under the banner of the Dark Universe, with the intention to compete with Walt Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe and Warner Brother’s Justice League. The first attempt was “The Mummy,” an old time cinematic series from Universal, with this new product a failure at the box office and universally panned by critics.
The cause was lack of focus by director Alex Kurtzman (“People Like Us” 2012) and a meandering storyline in the screenplay by David Koepp, Christopher McQuarrie, and Dylan Kussman. They seemed to be making this project a vehicle for star Tom Cruise, while grafting in a subplot with Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde, another Universal Pictures oldie, that looked artificial and contrived.
The supporting cast includes Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Courtney B. Vance, Jake Johnson, Marwan Kenzari, and Javier Botet, all part of “The Mummy,” an unmitigated disaster that led Universal Pictures to completely cancel the Dark Universe, at least for the time being.
