High drama and action in the French Alps is the subject matter in “The Mountain.” Two brothers make a perilous journey through the Alps to reach a crashed airplane. The younger wants to search the wreckage for money and valuables, while the older only wants to look out for his brother’s safety. The situation complicates even more when they find a survivor. Tight direction by Edward Dmytryk (“The Caine Mutiny” 1954) makes this quite an engrossing drama.
Spencer Tracy and Robert Wagner play the brothers, which is quite a stretch as Tracy was born in 1900 and Wagner in 1930. This creative license does not seem to hurt the drama and suspense. The extended scene where Tracy is lifting Wagner by rope on a sheer cliff is particularly spellbinding. They deliver marvelous performances, per usual for the amazing Spencer Tracy. Co-stars include Claire Trevor, William Demarest, Richard Arden, Anna Kashfi, E. G. Marshall, Stacy Harris, Harry Townes, Richard Garrick, Stacy Harris, Yves Brainville, and Barbara Darrow as Simone.
Beautiful cinematography by Franz Planer in the French Alps was a great backdrop for the black-and-white film, with costumes designed by Edith Head. The very watchable “The Mountain” was not a big success at the box office for Paramount Pictures.
