“The Millionairess” is a romantic comedy about a wealthy young woman who must marry a man who meets particular requirements in her father’s will, or else forget about it. She falls in love with a doctor who is not up to snuff, and the comedy proceeds from there. Anthony Asquith provides adequate directing at the helm of this comedy, with an acceptable screenplay by Riccardo Aragno and Wolf Mankowitz, adapted from a George Bernard Shaw play.
Sophia Loren is perfect in the title role. In many ways, “The Millionairess” is a vehicle for her extensive talents, both comedic and dramatic. Co-stars include Peter Sellers, Alistair Sim, Vittorio De Sica, Gary Raymond, Dennis Price, Alfie Bass, Miriam Karlin, Noel Purcell, and Graham Stark as the butler. “The Millionairess” was a modest success in theaters for 20th Century Fox.
