My Review

“The Meg” is an old fashioned science fiction action fun from director Jon Turteltaub (“National Treasure” 2004) and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura (“Transformers” film series) and Colin Wilson (“Jurassic Park” 1993). This picture has all of the thrills, chills, and spills of the old B movies, and there are striking similarities to Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” of 1975. A giant sea creature attacks a deep-sea submersible, trapping the crew at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Guess what the creature turns out to be? Stay tuned!

“The Meg” sports quite a diverse international cast, including Jason Statham (England), Li Bingbing (China), Rainn Wilson and Page Kennedy (America), Winston Chao (Taiwan), Ruby Rose and Jessica McNamee (Australia), Olafur Darri Olafsson (Iceland), and Cliff Curtis (New Zealand). There are also veterans from popular television shows such as Robert Taylor (Sheriff Walt Longmire from “Longmire” 2012-2017) and Masi Oka (coroner Dr. Max Bergman of “Hawaii 5-0” 2010-2017).

“The Meg” was written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, superbly adapted from Steve Alten’s 1997 novel “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.” This very watchable picture from Warner Bros. was a hit at the box office. A sequel was released in 2023 called “Meg 2: The Trench,” also starring Jason Statham.
