The exploration of the planet Mars and discovery of inhabitants there is the subject of the exciting mini-series “The Martian Chronicles.” Director Michael Anderson (“Around the World in 80 Days” 1956) and teleplay author Richard Matheson expertly adapted this show from Ray Bradbury’s 1950 sci-fi novel of the same name.
The talented big-name cast turned in some great performances, including Rock Hudson, Richard Oldfield, Bernie Casey, Darren McGavin, Roddy McDowall, Fritz Weaver, Joyce Van Patten, Gayle Hunnicutt, Laurie Holden, Estelle Brody, Maria Schell, Christopher Connelly, Barry Morse, and Bernadette Peters.
“The Martian Chronicles” was filmed in England, Malta, and the Canary Islands, and first aired on NBC from Jan. 27-29, 1980, with four hours of viewing. It has passed the test of time, and is about five hours of excellent science fiction on DVD these days, with deleted scenes added back in.
