My Review

John Wayne strikes it rich when he finds gold and becomes “The Lucky Texan.” Wayne and partner George “Gabby” Hayes soon run into trouble as the local assayers try to cheat them out of their claim.

This is a typical B-western movie turned out by Lone Star Pictures and distributed by Monogram Pictures usually under one hour running time. Wayne starred in a slew of these films in the 1930’s before his breakout role in “Stagecoach” in 1939. This one was written and directed by Robert N. Bradbury and produced by Paul Malvern.

Co-stars with John Wayne includes Barbara Sheldon, Lloyd Whitlock, George “Gabby” Hayes, Yakima Canutt, Eddie Parker, Gordon De Main, and Earl Dwire as Sheriff Miller. This was an early role for both Canutt and Hayes. Canutt became a legendary stuntman as well as actor in Hollywood westerns. This role was a rare appearance of Gabby Hayes without a beard, one of his first as a loyal comic sidekick to either John Wayne or Roy Rogers.
