A race car driver and his mechanic come into ownership of a Volkswagen Beetle which seems to have a mind of its own. This wreaks havoc in the race track community and in the Walt Disney film “The Love Bug.” Director Robert Stevenson (“Mary Poppins” 1964) did a great job of creating an entertaining sports comedy-drama, from a good screenplay by Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi. This film was produced under the personal supervision of Walt Disney, his last live-action project before his passing on December 15, 1966.
The stars of the show are Dean Jones as the race car driver, Michelle Lee as his girl friend, David Tomlinson as the car dealer, Buddy Hackett as the wise-cracking mechanic, as well as Joe Flynn, Benson Fong, Joe E. Ross, Gary Owens, Chick Hern, Andy Granatelli, Ned Glass, Wally Boag, Robert Foulk, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, and Herbie the love bug as himself. The watchable “The Love Bug” was a big hit at the box office for producer Bill Walsh, Walt Disney Productions, Buena Picture Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company.
This movie was followed by five sequels or remakes: “Herbie Rides Again” (1974), “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo” (1977), “Herbie Goes Bananas” (1980), “Disney’s The Love Bug” (1997), and “Herbie: Fully Loaded” (2005).
