My Review

“The Long Game” is a drama film about five Mexican-American young men employed as caddies at a south Texas golf course in the 1950’s who aspire to excel in the game of golf. They come under the tutelage of two coaches, one white and one Hispanic, hoping to compete state-wide. Director-screenwriter Julio Quintana expertly assembled this underdog story and uplifting drama into a heart-warming sports movie. The script was adapted from “Mustang Miracle,” a 2010 book by Humberto G. Garcia.

Jay Hernandez and Dennis Quaid star as the two coaches. The five Mustangs are played by Julian Works, Gregory Diaz IV, Miguel Angel Garcia, Christian Gallegos, and Jose Julian. Other cast includes Cheech Marin, Brett Cullen, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Oscar Nunez, Paulina Chavez, Gillian Vigman, and Heather Kafka. “The Long Game” is a very watchable film from producer Dennis Quaid, Harbor View, Fifth Season, Bonniedale, Jaguar Bite, and Mucho Mas Media.

“The Long Game” was first shown at the South By Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas, in March, 2023. It had some success in theatrical release in April, 2024, and is currently streaming on Netflix.
