In 1984, Michael Eisner became the chairman and CEO at The Walt Disney Company, bringing along Jeffrey Katzenberg with him from Paramount Pictures to revive the decaying Feature Animation unit. They succeeded, first with “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” in 1988, then “The Little Mermaid” the next year.
The innovative animation and creative storyline of “The Little Mermaid” by Ron Clements was based on the 1838 Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale. Clements shared the directing and writing chores with John Musker, as was the case with future projects such as “Aladdin” in 1992. A key attribute of their pictures is a great musical score. “Mermaid” won two Oscars for Alan Menken: Best Original Score and Best Original Song, “Under the Sea.”
The talented voice cast includes Jodi Benson as Princess Ariel, Christopher Daniel Barnes as Prince Eric, Pat Carroll as Ursula, Buddy Hackett as Scuttle, Ben Wright as Grimsby, Edie McClurg as Carlotta, Will Ryan as the seahorse, Paddi Edwards as the pet eels, Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian, Kenneth Mars as King Triton, and Rene Auberjonois as the Chef.
The very watchable “The Little Mermaid” is a wonderful story of a mermaid who dreams of becoming human after falling in love with a human prince. It was a massive hit atthe box office for Walt Disney Feature Animation, Walt Disney Pictures, and The Walt Disney Company.
