My Review

“The Lion King” is a musical animated coming-of-age story about a young lion who must reclaim the family throne taken from his father by an evil uncle. Directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff did an outstanding job of creating an excellent dramatic story with colorful animation and an excellent musical score by Hans Zimmer, featuring five original songs written by Tim Rice (lyrics) and Elton John (music).

The voice cast includes Jonathan Taylor Thomas as young Simba, Matthew Broderick as the adult Simba, James Earl Jones as Simba’s father Mufasa, Jeremy Irons as Uncle Scar, Moira Kelly, Nathan Lane, Robert Guillaume, Rowan Atkinson, Madge Sinclair, Ernie Sabella, Jim Cummings, Cheech Marin, and Whoopi Goldberg. Often described as the greatest animated movie of all time, the screenplay was written by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton.

The very watchable “The Lion King” was the highest grossing film of 1994, making nearly one billion dollars at the global box office for Walt Disney Feature Animation, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score (Zimmer) and Best Original Song (“Can You Feel the Love Tonight” Rice and John). The two non-winners were Best Original Song (“Circle of Life”) and Best Original Song (“Hakuna Mutata”).
