My Review

A fictional story involving real people is the essence of “A Lion in Winter.” The drama revolves around King Henry II of England and a Christmas time visit in 1183 with his imprisoned wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine. Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn are marvelous in these roles, given splendid dialogue from the well-penned screenplay by James Goldman and focused direction by Anthony Harvey.

The supporting cast is equally impressive. Anthony Hopkins make his motion picture debut as their son Richard the Lionheart. John Castle and Nigel Terry are the royal couple’s two younger sons, Timothy Dalton is the King of France, as well as Jane Merrow, Nigel Stock, Kenneth Ives, and O. Z. Whitehead as the Bishop of Durham. This was also Dalton’s first big movie role.

“The Lion in Winter” won three Oscars: Best Actress (Kate Hepburn), Best Screenplay (Goldman), and Best Original Score (John Barry). The very watchable drama was successful at the box office for Haworth Productions and AVCO Embassy Pictures.
