My Review

Director Ang Lee (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” 2000) won the Oscar for Best Director for his job at the helm of “The Life Of Pi.” The story is about two survivors of a shipwreck, a 16-year-old Indian boy and a ferocious Bengal tiger, sharing a lifeboat for 227 days on the Pacific Ocean. Viewers are on the edge of their seats for more than two hours waiting to see what happens next in Pi’s struggle for survival. Tensions are palpable, the plot is believable, thanks to great direction by Lee, and a well-penned screenplay by David Magee. It was adapted from the 2001 novel of the same name by Yann Martel.

Suraj Sharma did an outstanding job as Pi Patel, who nearly monopolized the screen time (with the tiger). Quite a tour-de-force! The co-stars, in what amount to small parts, include Rafe Spall, Tabu, Gerard Depardieu, Adil Hussain, Mythili Prakash, T. M. Karthik, Amarendran Ramanan, Wang Po-chieh, Jag Huang, and Andrea Di Stefano as the Priest.

“The Life of Pi” was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, winning four including Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Visual Effects. The watchable movie was a success at the box office for producer-director Ang Lee and 20th Century Fox.
