Producer-director Robert Redford put together a real dud of a movie called “The Legend of Bagger Vance.” The story of a “magical helper” for a professional golfer who had been going through difficulties seems just plain silly. The storyline from the mediocre screenplay by Jeremy Leven, adapted from the 1995 novel by Steven Pressfield, has no believability, despite Redford’s lush production values, costumes, sets, pretty golf courses, etc. The book was no doubt better than the movie.
The actors turned in good performances, including Will Smith, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Bruce McGill, Joel Gretsch, J. Michael Moncrief, Wilbur Fitzgerald, Lane Smith, and Jack Lemmon. Lane Smith and Jack Lemmon made their final big screen roles in “The Legend of Bagger Vance,” a box office bomb for Allied Film Makers, DreamWorks Pictures, and 20th Century Fox.
