My Review

Gina Lollobrigida’s smoldering presence dominates the screen in “The Law,” an Italian-French movie that tells the story of a southern Italian fishing village governed by corrupt criminal elements. An engineer comes to town to drain the swamp, and in the process attempts to aid the townsfolk to take back control of their village.

American director Jules Dassin (“The Naked City” 1948) made sure to include subplots which featured Lollobrigida’s patented sensuality. He co-wrote the screenplay, with its sometimes meandering storyline, with Diego Fabbri and Francoise Girovd, based on the 1957 novel “La Loi” (“The Law”) by Roger Vailland.

Gina Lollobrigida had some famous European co-stars like Marcello Mastroianni, Yves Montand, and Melina Mercouri. Great chemistry here! The supporting cast includes Pierre Brasseur, Vittorio Caprioli, Nino Vingelli, Joe Dassin, et al. “The Law” was not a big success at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and the various Italian and French production companies involved.
