My Review

“The Last Picture Show” is a coming-of-age drama set in a small town in Texas in 1951, centered on two high school seniors who are life-long friends. Director Peter Bogdanovich became famous with this movie, filled with good production values, great performances by the cast, and a well-crafted screenplay he wrote with Larry McMurtry, adapted from McMurtry’s 1966 novel of the same name.

The cast includes Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Ben Johnson, Cloris Leachman, Ellen Burstyn, Eileen Brennan, Clu Gulager, Sam Bottoms, Randy Quaid, John Hillerman, Frank Marshall, and Cybill Shepherd in her movie debut. Johnson and Leachman won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, out of six nominations.

“The Last Picture Show” was very successful at the box office for BBS Productions and Columbia Pictures. It was filmed in black-and-white, with a sequel released in 1990 called “Texasville.”
