“The Last of the Mohicans” is a slickly produced historical drama about two Native Americans who rescue two daughters of a British Army officer from an ambush, with loads of melodrama proceeding from there, set in the backdrop of the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Producer-director Michael Mann (“Manhunter” 1986) put together a handsome film with great production values, noteworthy performances, marvelous cinematography by Dante Spinotti, and a quality screenplay he co-wrote with Christopher Crowe.
The talented and diverse cast includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May, Russell Means, Eric Schweig, Steven Waddington, Wes Studi, Colm Meaney, Pete Postlethwaite, Maurice Roeves, Patrice Chereau, Edward Blatchford, Terry Kinney, Tracy Ellis, Dennis Banks, Jared Harris, Tim Hopper, David Schofield, Malcolm Storry, and Sebastian Roche as Martin.
“The Last of the Mohicans” was successful in theatrical release for 20th Century Fox. It won one Academy Award for Best Sound, and was based on the 1826 novel of the same name by James Fenimore Cooper.
