My Review

Forest Whitaker won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland.” Whitaker convincingly portrayed the President of Uganda (1971-1979) under the superb direction of Kevin MacDonald (“Being Mick” 2001) from an outstanding screenplay written by Jeremy Brock and Peter Morgan, adapted from the 1998 novel of the same name by Giles Foden.

While Whitaker took the accolades, the performance of James McAvoy is the backbone of the movie. He played the fictional Dr. Nicholas Garrigan, a young Scottish doctor who became Amin’s personal physician and eventually his political advisor, facing increasing danger as the film progressed.

Co-stars include Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, Simon McBurney, and David Oyelowo. “The Last King of Scotland” was successful in theatrical release for DNA Films, FilmFour, and Fox Searchlight Pictures.
