“The Kids Are All Right” is a comedy-drama film from director-screenwriter Lisa Cholodenko (“Laurel Canyon” 2002). The story is about a lesbian couple whose two children contact their biological father, a sperm donor to one of the women. Comedy, drama, and general havoc then descends upon their little family.
Cholodenko, who co-wrote the screenplay with Stuart Blumberg, did a good job with production values, but was also unfortunately strong on offensive and negative material that gave the film its R rating: Depictions of teen drug use, bad language, and nude scenes.
The cast delivered good performances, with Annette Benning and Julianne Moore as the two moms, Mark Ruffalo as the biological father, and Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska as the two teenagers. (Hutcherson would go on to greater fame as a lead character in the “Hunger Games” movie series of 2012-2015.) Co-stars include Yaya DaCosta, Eddie Hassell, Zosia Mamet, Kunal Sharma, and James Macdonald.
“The Kids Are All Right” was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (Bening), and Best Supporting Actor (Ruffalo). It was a modest success in theatrical release for the group of independent filmmakers that financed the project, including Antidote Films and Mandalay Pictures.
