My Review

Fine performances and a plot-driven story characterize the drama film “The Judge.” Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Jr. play a father and son who have a dysfunctional history to work out when Downey returns to his home town for his mother’s funeral. The plot thickens when Duvall’s character, a judge in the area for some forty-two years, is accused of murder. Downey, a high-priced and famous attorney from the big city, must decide if he wants to defend his dad, or not.

Downey and Duvall really deliver in this picture with great performances and outstanding on-screen chemistry. Robert Duvall won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his efforts. The screenplay by Nick Schenk and Bill Dubuque is top-rate. Director David Dobkin (“Fred Clause” 2007) is so adept at his job that the two hours moves along swiftly.

The supporting cast includes Vera Farmiga, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Dax Shepard, Billy Bob Thornton, Leighton Meester, Emma Tremblay, Balthazar Getty, David Krumholtz, Grace Zabriskie, Denis O’Hare, Sarah Lancaster, and Ken Howard as Judge Warren. Ken Howard was the President of SAG-AFTRA during this production. This was one of his last films as he passed away in 2016.

The very watchable film “The Judge” was a modest hit at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures.
