“The Joy Luck Club” is a drama movie that tells the story of four Chinese-American woman and their relationships with their mothers, all immigrants from China. Director Wayne Wang (“Slam Dance” 1987) put together an intimate look into people’s lives with good acting and marvelous details of Chinese culture. The screenplay was penned by Amy Tan and Ronald Bass, adapted from Tan’s 1989 novel of the same name. The film did run a little long with a 139 minute running time.
The cast includes France Nuyen, Lisa Lu, Kieu Chinh, and Tsai Chin as the four mothers, with the daughters played by Rosalind Chao, Lauren Tom, Tamlyn Tomita, and Ming-na Wen. Co-stars include Andrew McCarthy, Russell Wong, Diane Baker, Michael Paul Chan, Christopher Rich, Vivian Wu, Victor Wong, and Philip Moon as Ken. The watchable “Joy Luck Club” did have modest success at the box office for producer Oliver Stone, Hollywood Pictures, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company.
