My Review

Meryl Streep won her third Oscar for her stunning portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady.” Director Phyllida Lloyd (“Mama Mia!” 2008) and screenwriter Abi Morgan keep the movie well organized, especially with the numerous flashback scenes. Streep’s performance is so convincing that the viewer often forgets her and think they are watching the Prime Minister herself up on the big screen. This tour-de-force by Meryl won her numerous awards beside the Academy Award. (A second Oscar for the film went for Best Makeup.)

The supporting cast also includes some other performance gems, including Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher, Olivia Colman as Carol Thatcher, Robin Kermode as John Major, John Sessions as Edward Heath, and Reginald Green as Ronald Reagan. Alexandra Roach and Harry Lloyd do quite well as the young Margaret and Denis Thatcher.

“The Iron Lady” was a success in theatrical release for the numerous British and French film companies involved, including Pathe, UK Film Council, Canal+, Cine+, Film 4 Productions, and BBC Films.
