My Review

Oscar winning producer-director Martin Scorsese (“The Departed” 2006) has created an awesome crime drama called “The Irishman.” It is the story of a meat packing company delivery driver hired as a hitman for the Philadelphia Mafia crime family, who eventually goes to work for Teamster president James Hoffa.

This ambitious project was turned into an epic motion picture lasting three-and-a-half hours, a very smooth and well paced 209 minutes. Scorsese got some career performances from three principal actors: Robert DeNiro as the Irish-American hitman Frank Sheeran, Al Pacino as Hoffa, and Joe Pesci as the Philadelphia crime boss.

The screenplay penned by Steven Zaillian (Oscar winner for “Schindler’s List” 1993) was fantastic material for the actors to work from. The supporting cast includes Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel, Kathrine Narducci, Jack Huston as Robert F. Kennedy, and Steven Van Zandt doing a perfect imitation of Jerry Vale.

This film was adapted from the 2004 book “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt. It is the uncorroborated story of the real-life Frank Sheeran and his dealings with James Hoffa. Whether true or not, “The Irishman” from Netflix is without a doubt very watchable entertainment.
