My Review

Robby the Robot made his second movie appearance (after his 1956 “Forbidden Planet” debut) in 1957’s “The Invisible Boy.” The story depicts Robby and a ten-year-old boy battling a supercomputer who wants to take over the Earth. The black-and-white film is innocuous entertainment, well-crafted by director Herman Hoffman, and was a modest hit at the box office for producer Nicholas Nayfack and screenwriter Cyril Hume (both in the same roles in “Forbidden Planet” 1956) and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The cast includes child actor Richard Eyer as the invisible boy, Harold J. Stone as Gen. Swayne, Philip Abbott and Diane Brewster as the boy’s parents, Robert H. Harris, Andrew Lockwood, Gage Clarke, Than Wyenn, Ralph Votrian, and Marvin Miller as the voice of Robby the Robot. Diane Brewster became most famous for her recurring role as second grade teacher Miss Canfield in the television sitcom “Leave it to Beaver” (1957-1958). Robby the Robot went on to make numerous appearances in motion pictures and television shows, too numerous to mention here.
