My Review

The drama continues in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” Producer Nina Jacobson and director Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend” 2007) have put together a slick and fast-moving two-and-a-half hour film with a well-written screenplay by Simon Beaufoy and Michael De Bruyn , based on Suzanne Collins’s second book of the Hunger Games series “Catching Fire.”

Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen, District 12’s hero from the 74th Hunger Games. Josh Hutcherson is also back as her partner Peeta Mellark; they are set to compete in the 75th event. Many complications arise thanks to President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland) and Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson).

The cast also includes Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, Willow Shields, Paula Malcomson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Amanda Plummer, Sam Claflin, Lynn Cohen, Jena Malone, Alan Ritchson, Meta Golding, and Bruno Gunn.

Because of the success of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” and the abundance of material in the third novel “Mockingjay” by Collins, Lionsgate Films will be splitting part three into two films to be released in 2014 and 2015. Big box office here for Lionsgate and Color Force after the film was shot in Georgia and Hawaii.
