My Review

“The History Boys” is a British play brought to the big screen with the original writer, director, and cast. Alan Bennett adapted his own play for film – the story of eight students preparing for entry into the prestigious universities at Oxford or Cambridge.

Director Nicholas Hyntner (“The Crucible” 1996) did an excellent job with the material and the actors. He did the same outstanding job in the movie as he did in the first production at the Royal National Theatre in London.

The cast playing the students include Samuel Anderson, Samuel Barnett, Dominic Cooper, James Corden, Sacha Dhawan, Andrew Knott, Russell Tovey, Jamie Parker. Some familiar faces portraying school staff include Richard Griffiths, Stephen Campbell Moore, and Clive Merrison, as well as Frances de la Tour, Penelope Wilton, Adrian Scarborough, and Georgia Taylor.

“The History Boys” is a fast-moving and informative and watchable motion picture brought to us by BBC Films, DNA Films, and the UK Film Council, distributed in America by Fox Searchlight Pictures.
